Museum of Monterey

Museum of Monterey

Also known as the Monterey History and Maritime Museum, the Museum of Monterey explores the rich history of the Central California city and its unbreakable connection to the Pacific Ocean.

Monterey is undoubtedly linked to the sea, through the fishing and canning practices which put the city on the map as the Sardine Capital of the World, and even further back when the area was discovered by sea-faring Spanish explorers. The Museum of Monterey illuminates the city's close connection with the sea while maintaining conversations with the cultural evolution of the ever-growing region.

Established in 1971, the Museum of Monterey started off with a single person's collection of maritime artifacts. It wasn't until 1991 that the museum gained the support it needed to evolve into the historic facility it is today. Now, the Museum of Monterey has expanded to cover the history of the entire region through manuscripts, photographs, and paintings, furnishings as well as artifacts. You can explore the facility and discover over 6,000 artifacts, 50,000 photographs, and 580 glass prisms from the lighthouse among the seven exhibit areas exploring the full span of Monterey history.

Round out your maritime experience with a visit to Cannery Row, the centerpiece of Monterey's sardine canning era, and historic Fisherman's Wharf.
