Welcome to the San Antonio Museum of Art, one of the best places to appreciate local, regional, fine, and contemporary art in the city!
The San Antonio Museum of Art, or SAMA, first opened in 1981, since then growing into one of the most comprehensive collections of world art in the state. There are over 5,000 years of the art covered here, the exhibits all 'taking you around the world and through time'. The museum is especially renowned for having the most comprehensive ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian art collections in the Southern United States.
Here are a few specific spots to see during your visit:
- Nelson A Rockefeller Latin American Art Wing
- Asian Art Wing
- Texas Art
- Contemporary Art
- Oceanic Art
- Islamic Art
- European Art
There are, of course, several more you should see, though we won't take the time to list them all. If you are traveling here with a school group you will have several different educational tour options, with specific tours meant for adult, college, k-12, and early childhood levels. There will be age-specific curriculum coverage in the k-12 tours, with examples such as American the Beautiful, Around the World in 50 Minutes, Asian Caravan, and Science and Art Converge.
If your group would like, there is also an onsite eatery, Tre Trattoria. This Tuscan hillside inspired family-style Italian eatery will give you amazing riverfront views, as well as amazingly delicious pasta, antipasti, and fresh flatbread pizzas.
