Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse
Oftentimes overlooked due to its small stature and limited visibility, the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse is actually quite the charming seaside gem! This unique lighthouse is located at a remote location at the east end of the Manteo waterfront, jetting 40 yards into the Roanoke Sound.
The lighthouse features a prim white exterior, black shutters, and a red-shingled roof, sitting on 80+ screw piles (originally only seven!). This lighthouse isn't the original, it is actually the 4th lighthouse using the name, this particular structure a replica of the 1877 version in Wanchese.
During your group visit, you can stroll the wooden boardwalk and enjoy the magnificent waterfront view, or come inside and see various local maritime history exhibits. Learn about the 'long and stormy maritime history' of Manteo, then learn more about the 4th order, 2ft, 4-inch Fresnel lens inside the lantern room that serves as an active aid in navigating boats into Shallowbag Bay.
