Brookgreen Gardens

Hidden in the deep green boughs of South Carolina is the wildlife preserve and sculpture park better known as Brookgreen Gardens. Brookgreen Gardens is one of the only attractions in the United States to be named a wildlife preserve, accredited museum, and a national historic landmark. Situated on the grounds of a historic plantation, this preserve skillfully and artfully combines nature, wildlife, art, and history into a captivating environment fit for all ages.

Brookgreen Gardens is open daily from 9:30 am-5:00 pm with special extended hours for programs and events. For the most beautiful visit, come during the spring and summer months when the trees are covered in green leaves and the flowers are blooming in spectacular shades of color. Begin in the Diana Garden and travel back in time through the oak allee filled with three-hundred-year-old oak trees that were planted when the plantation was a thriving rice farm. Throughout the gardens, you will find beautiful sculptures that work to illuminate the sensational artwork of nature and the artistic expression of man’s imagination.

From there, travel to the zoo where children and adults will enjoy interactive engagements with the animals. There are three major exhibits at Brookgreen Gardens: Native Animals, Domestic Animals, and the Cypress Aviary, one of the only aviaries built on an existing cypress swamp. Visit historic rare breeds of domestic animals that worked on the farm back in the 1700s like the Marsh Tacky Horses and Spanish Goats. You will continue your foray into conservation and education as you observe many native and domestic animals, as well as many local cypress aviaries. See alligators, gray foxes, Dominique chickens, marsh tacky horses, egrets, and ibises all throughout!

There are several other indoor buildings along the way if you need to cool off, a couple of favorites being the Children’s Discovery Room, Keepsake Gift Shop, and Pavilion Restaurant. Take a guided tour, jump in on a workshop or program, or visit the various exhibits along the way. There are boat rides that turn into history lessons and trips to the Butterfly House that provide eco-insight like no other.
