Erie Canal Discovery Center
The Erie Canal Discovery Center is a 3-floor multimedia interactive museum that will transport your group back to the 1820s as you learn the interesting history of the Erie Canal and all the awe-inspiring engineering feats that have happened on it.
This popular Erie Canal museum is located in Lockport, New York, just 30 minutes east of Niagara Falls. The museum features art and information on the history of the Erie Canal, with an onsite gift shop located inside this 1843 'Canal Stone' building. The building itself sits right next to the 'Flight of Five' and Locks 34 and 35, which we highly recommend you take a stroll to after your visit to the museum.
While exploring the museum your group will learn all about the creation of the canal and locks in the 19th century. Start your journey by watching the film Gateways East and West, a 15-minute information video about the building of the canal, Flight of Five, and Deep Cut. You will board a 'packet boat' for a simulated night ride through the 1820s locks for a part of the film. Next explore several interactive displays that will allow you to move a boat from the locks, hear personal stories from workers, and test your canal knowledge overall. Before you go be sure to visit the onsite gift shop, the Lock, Stock, and Barrel Museum Shop, or perhaps the City of Lockport Visitor Center or the 3rd floor Charles Rand Penney Collection.
