Levine Museum of the New South
While your adult group is in Charlotte, you should stop by and check out the Levine Museum of the New South. The location is an interactive history museum that provides guests with the most comprehensive interpretation of post-Civil War southern society. The term New South refers to people, places, and a time period of 1865 to the present day. The team will have the opportunity to check out fascinating exhibits that contain information on men, women, children, and newcomers who have helped shape the south since the war.
The exhibits at the Levine Museum of the New South are educational and entertaining. The Museum’s centerpiece exhibit and the nation’s most comprehensive interpretation of post-Civil War Southern history is known as Cotton Fields to Skyscrapers. The exhibition contains more than 1000 artifacts, images, video clips, music, and oral histories. You and your group mates will have an interactive hands-on experience. The exhibit uses Charlotte and its 13 surrounding counties as a case study to illustrate the profound changes in the South since the Civil War.
The team will encounter six different environments at the exhibit. Group members will do activities such as step inside a one-room tenant farmers house, run your hand through a pile of seed cotton, listen to the churning of the cotton mill, play checkers on the front porch of a mill house, and sit at a lunch counter and hear personal accounts from local sit-in leaders. You will also walk down Main Street and try on a hat in an early Belk department store.
