Museo de Arte Costarricense

Bienvenidos a la Museo de Arte Costarricense, the large Spanish-style structure that is fully dedicated to the conservation, exhibition, and promotions of arts in the country. MAC, located at the eastern entrance to the popular Parque La Sabana in San Jose, is popular not only for its dedication to the arts but for its original use as an airport terminal. Before becoming this famous museum this location served as the main airport terminal for San Jose until 1955, under the name of El Coco La Sabana International Airport. Newly remodeled recently, this museum now hosts the best regional art and other Costa Rican artist exhibits. It is considered to be the largest and most important collection of Costa Rican artist work from colonial time to present.

The permanent collection within consists of over 6,000 pieces, various masterpieces from artist such as Juan Manuel Sanchez, Max Jimenez, and Lola Fernandez. The back patio of this museum, which used to be the old tarmac, is now a beautiful and large sculpture garden, a free attraction which anchors the eastern edge of La Sabana Parque. Take a tour of the entire complex and see paintings, sculptures, and various photography, or perhaps take part in any local happening arts or performance activities happening on campus. Be sure to save some time to learn about and admire the building itself, a celebrated neo-classical style structure built in the 1930s originally, remodeled to its present glory after conversion to a museum in 1978.
