Take the Cacao Trail in all of its original, cultural, historic, and truly delicious splendor in your best hiking boots and prepare yourselves for some of the tastiest and most interesting chocolate experiences you’ve ever had. Ixcacao Chocolate is the original Maya Chocolaterie, a true full-sensory experience when it comes to discovering, learning about, sampling, and making fresh chocolate beans and bars. You will be able to partake in various samples and Maya style hot chocolate, but until then take in all the wonderful nature-filled experiences on your way there.
Your group will start the delicious Cacao Trail excursion with a 1.5-hour jungle trek, each step full of the cacao fruit-bearing trees alongside much hidden Maya history and tradition. Learn about how Mayans believed cacao improved fertility and overall health while seeing the orange-to-brown fruits themselves, white and succulent with fruit and seeds in the middle. The trees themselves are about 5-12 inches long and 5 inches wide, which you will learn all about during the narrated trail tour.
You will learn all about the sweet treat from tree to bar back up at the sample-filled establishment, as well as learn how to properly use the heirloom stone tools to crush beans and in turn make your own organic dark chocolate bar. Juan and Abelina will serve a delicious farm to table meal and you will have the further option of spending more time here to learn about a nearby Belize Spice Farm, a spice-filled haven filled with delightful smelling things such as cardamom, vanilla, allspice, and nutmeg.
