The Grotto
The National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother, or perhaps more commonly known as The Grotto, is an outdoor shrine and sanctuary located within the Madison South District of Portland. This Roman Catholic shrine is known for its impressive Pieta and serene botanical gardens, the entire area a massive 62 acres. Explore and enjoy the manicured landscape, peaceful scenery, and spiritual surroundings as you and your group take mindful walks or participate in natural meditation, great spiritual activities for guests of any faith. The entire establishment strives to provide an overall sense of welcome, the gorgeous environment conducive to peace, quiet, and spiritual inspiration.
Over 200,000 visitors from all over the world visit this garden and shrine annually, more visitors than many other local landmarks, that’s for certain. The park acreage itself is magnificently covered with fir trees, rhododendrons, and other location-appropriate and beautiful native plants. You will see the internationally renowned Our Lady’s Grotto, the actual rock cave carved into the base of a 110-foot cliff, as well as the life-size marble replica of Michelangelo's Pieta. The ministries and services provided here include counseling, education, spiritual direction, and liturgical celebration if you so choose to take part. Be sure to check if you happen to be here during any of the annual/holiday festivals, such as the popular Lights for Christmas show.
