Luray Caverns
The most spectacular underground experience in the East is located here, at Luray Caverns. What started as a limestone sinkhole atop a big hill has turned into the biggest discovery of the area, a local tinsmith discovering this cavern with a candle in 1878. Today Luray is a world-renowned U.S. landmark that sees millions of visitors per year. It is also the largest series of caverns on the east coast, an eerie world of hundreds of thousands of stalactites and stalagmites that have been forming for over 4 billion years!
Inside your group will see enormous chambers with stunning stone columns, shimmering draperies, and clear pools. Check out Dream Lake, the largest body of water in the cavern that acts as a perfect reflection mirror for the stones around it. Next head over to the 47 foot high tallest structure in the cave, the double column. Listen to the world's largest instrument, the Stalacpipe Organ, vibrate throughout the 3 acres of caverns or take notice of the snow white calcite buildups of Titania's Veil. You will be astounded at the natural wonder and beauty within Luray, a registered national landmark that gives you a better understanding of man's environment. Be sure to stop at the garden maze, museum, and gift shop before you leave!
