Midwest Genealogy Center
If your group has a little extra time to truly explore all that Kansas City has to offer we highly suggest a stop at the Midwest Genealogy Center, one of the United States' 'preeminent resources for family history'.
Technically located in Independence, just about 15 minutes from downtown KC, the Midwest Genealogy Center, or MGC for short, first opened in 2008. Over the past decade, it has filled it's 52,000 square feet of library space with countless free resources that aid in searching family history. The materials and information span the United States and other countries, this 'uniquely expansive circulating collection and mostly open stacks' providing access to various databases, scanning and digitization stations, oral history recording kits, microfilm reader scanners, and more. You will find over 23,000 genealogy and local history books throughout the library!
Your group can take a tour while here, a 45 minute to an hour guided walk through the building that quickly and efficiently covers all the resources available, as well as the building amenities. Be sure to check and see if there are any events or classes happening during your visit, some good examples of what is regularly offered to be such events as 'Beginning Genealogy' and 'Researching Your Civil War Soldier'.
