In pre-Hispanic times this spot was utilized for several important things as well, such as a pilgrimage spot, trading post, and bad-weather hideout. Legend has it that the Mayan Gods actually created this place with the perfect combination of ‘wisdom, illusions, and a love of beauty’, leaving three animals as guards of the grounds (iguana, parrot fish, pelican).
