Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum
There’s always something happening at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum!
Opened in 2002, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is a free maritime museum that focuses on the history and shipwrecks of the Outer Banks. This museum is located in Hatteras Village, at the southernmost spot on Hatteras Island.
Inside the museum, your group will find artifacts and exhibits covering the state's shipwreck history, a gift shop, and year-round programming for all ages. Enjoy fun onsite activities such as the family/youth scavenger hunt, and any possible special event such as December's Holidays on Hatteras, May's British War Graves, or April's Underwater Heritage Symposium. Here are some examples of programming you can look forward to during your visit.:
- Salty Dawg Series - Late May - September - Tuesdays at 2:00 pm: Enjoy seafood cooking, history, and culture talks on the Civil War and WWII, maritime art, and fishing history.
- Maritime Crafts - Late May - September - Wednesdays at 10:30 am: Put together classic maritime crafts while learning snippets of local history.
- Sam Green - Late May - November - Fridays: Watch Sam Green make canvas-backed decoys within the museum each Friday afternoon.
