The Powder Magazine

Completed in 1713, the Powder Magazine is one of the two surviving fortified structures of its kind in what were the original Thirteen Colonies. It is also one of the few remaining surviving military structures associated with the siege and capture of Charleston by the British in 1780.The museum is owned and operated, since 1902, by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of South Carolina. While here, the group will have the opportunity to see several fascinating exhibits as part of the experience.

The exhibits at the Powder Magazine Museum are focused on South Carolina’s colonial and military history. The building was designed to hold five tons of gunpowder with 32-inch thick walls and a steep tiled roof with gables on all sides. The site has served as a print shop, a livery stable, a blacksmith shop, and a wine cellar during the Civil War while the Magazine served as an arsenal periodically from 1713-1820. Through the exhibits, group members will learn about various topics such as native wars, piracy, slave revolt, and the Revolutionary War. The location is a national historic landmark where visitors can enjoy learning about the significant history of the city and of the country at large. You can also browse the gift shop after your tour. Group members of all ages will enjoy visiting this historic building and learning about South Carolina’s early history.
